April 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

There’s an article up on Gamasutra from the Game Developers Conference 2007 on teaching Asian students English using MMO’s.  It’s related to a project of Edd Schneider and Kai Zeng, the paper is on “English Speaking Players as In-Game Content“:

Using World of Warcraft to Teach English?

What started out as a marketing concept has evolved into an educational project for teaching English through MMO’s.  They are now looking at setting up a Summer Camp in China to let kids play WOW with American kids to assist in their English learning.

This article is hosted on a computer gaming site, and was the product of the Game Developer’s Conference 2007 in San Francisco.  It shows that across the board, these social gaming platforms have been discovered as a new place for language immersion and learning by students that have grown up playing computer games.
