Alternate Reality Game: Sharkrunners

I’ve covered ARG’s (Alternate Reality Games) before here on this blog. The Discovery Channel has a very interesting new online game that they are running as part of their “Shark Week” series:

In this game the player plots out courses for a ship tracking sharks. Your mission is to capture information on sharks you encounter in your travels, compete with other shark runners, and increase your standings. The interesting aspect of this game is that while your ship, crew and travels are fictional, the sharks you encounter are not.

Here’s the Sharkrunner Help Page to give you an idea of what’s involved in the game:

The really interesting thing here is that your ship is always travelling, even when you are offline. If you encounter a shark, you will be sent an email or SMS (or both) message, and you will have a limited amount of time to get to a computer to successfully capture the data from the encounter.

A very interesting approach to an AVG with an educational bend.

  1. So Cool. Thanks for pointing me to this. I’m a little new to the ARG thing, but I am really fascinated by the whole thing. Can’t wait to write my own.

Thanks again for letting me know about the Sharks. Are you in the Bay? I went to school at SF State and miss the feeling of being part of that city.
