What are the odds? Two TV shows in two nights on two different networks with Second Life featured on the show. Tonight, everyone’s favorite Thursday night show (The Office) had Dwight creating an avatar in Second Life:
When he is asked by Jim “You playing that game again?” he responds with “Second Life is not a game. It is a multiuser virtual environment. It doesn’t have points or scores, it doesn’t have winners or losers.” Jim then responds saying “Oh, it has losers”. Funny, as a similar “Not a game” statement was made on CSI: NY last night. Maybe this is a mass media campaign by Linden Lab to dispel the image of Second Life as a game?
Later in the show Dwight’s avatar is discovered by Jim, and he discloses that Dwight has created his own virtual world inside Second Life called “Second Second Life”. The Second Life content is a pretty minor part of the episode, but it is likely a setup for a future story arc in the show. Interesting how Second Life seems to be popping up all over the place these days. It will be interesting to see if this publicity results in a spike in people trying Second Life.
